Delegate Or Die – How to Kill Your Business in Five Easy Steps

Businesses always start from somewhere, and that’s usually as a one man band or a super small team, with the owner working on every aspect of the business. From marketing, sales, service delivery, operations, maybe HR all the way through to the administrative tasks.

With high hopes and big dreams, you might have created a business from a passion or a hobby because you’re good at what you do, and you’ve developed specialist skills over time to do what you do extremely well.

You might not have planned for the growth you’ve seen, then suddenly you’re working evenings and weekends to meet demand and to make sure you don’t lose clients because you haven’t delivered.

But your passion or hobby isn’t that anymore, it’s a business that’s generating revenue to give you the life you want to live. Or it should be.

When every waking hour is spent on admin, marketing, sales. operations and service delivery, you’ll hit that ceiling and will be limited in the choices available  to increase your revenue.

Making the decision to delegate is difficult because it makes us deal with a whole load of beliefs and values we’ve picked up over the years. Past experiences might taint your trust in others, or you’ve seen examples of when it’s all gone wrong and think it will be the same for you.

When I work with clients, there’s a bit of mindset work to do to flip the story so that they see delegation as a way to be in control rather than the other way around. Having your own business is meant to give you more freedom. If it doesn’t, you might as well be working for someone else.

So if growing a successful, revenue generating business that eventually runs without you ISN’T your bag. Here’s what to do:

Deciding what not to do is as important as deciding what to do.”

Jessica Jackley

1. KEEP HOLD OF EVERY SINGLE TASK

Don’t even think about handing over one single task. I mean, if you were to break down your years of experience and skill into an hourly rate, you’d be the most expensive admin person or marketing assistant out there.

One of the many reasons to delegate and expand your team IS so that the right people can get you the right results. Ever spent hours on creating content and researching hashtags only to find that it results in nothing?

In 2010, when I was running my jewellery business alongside my consulting work i made everything by hand, posted everything out myself, did my own social media, got myself set up for all the tradeshows. I’d come home after a 12 or 14 hour day and start completing orders.

People kept telling me to outsource the manufacturing, get someone to make the items for me, hire someone to do my social media posting but I was adamant that it was me that should do it. It got to the point where I was running myself into the ground, and when I eventually started to outsource, my business grew and I could focus on what I loved – designing and getting into more stores.

You might have started out on your own, but if you want to grow, scale and bring in the money, not only do you need to make sure your business is running like a well oiled machine, but that you have the right people on board to achieve your goals.

2. CONTINUE TO BELIEVE THAT NO-ONE CAN DO THE JOB BETTER THAN YOU

You might think it’s easier, better and quicker if you do it. But are you more worried that someone could do it better than you?

Marketing – can you really drive results better than having a marketing coach who’s had years of experience and created incredible outcomes for many clients by your side? Or even a marketing consultant to help put things into place for you?

Finance – are you also a closet accountant who knows exactly how to help you be more efficient with your business accounts and save you tax, create a financial strategy for your business to thrive?

SEO – are you in the know about what it really takes to optimise your SEO and get seen by the right people?

Admin – Do you have a hidden love of all things day-to-day and manual? Do you do it super efficiently and can you highlight where things can be sped up a little more? A virtual assistant or in-house PA can be an invaluable source of help. They specialise in organisation and admin management and will keep you on the straight and narrow without you having to do much at all.

You do what you do because you’ve excelled at it for many years and want to share your expertise to help others. Why not let specialists help you in the right area so you can focus on what you do best and learn how to be a business owner who’s not tied to their desk?

I was super reluctant to hire a coach in any form at all. For some reason, It had negative connotations for me. And I thought getting my branding right was a cost and not an investment. If I had stuck to those beliefs, I would have just plodded along, my business wouldn’t be where I am now, and I wouldn’t be working a three day week. I have a great business coach who’s been with me from the start, an incredibly talented marketing coach and an amazing branding and design agency who are my go to. I’ve also invested with other consultants to help me on my business because I need their help and expertise to make me a better business owner.

3. KEEP REFUSING TO INVEST IN YOUR BUSINESS

Yep, you will have to pay someone for their services, but it’s an INVESTMENT, not a cost. It might be a pain in the butt to source the right people, but if done right, you’ll have a team that’s on hand to support you with direction to free up your time. reduce the overwhelm and you’ll make that investment back a thousand times over.

Really think about WHY you set up your business in the first place. If you’ve lost that motivation somewhere, invest back into that dream to make it happen.

4. HOLD ON TO THAT FEAR OF LOSING CONTROL

If you really want to grow as an entrepreneur, you’ve got to
learn to delegate.”

5. TREAT LONG WORKING HOURS AS A BADGE OF HONOUR

…until your health starts to suffer. During my time in the city, it felt like a competition to see who worked until the early hours of the morning, who had less sleep. Other than you thinking people see you as a superhero (they don’t), you’re literally killing yourself.

I ended up with Thoracic Outlet Syndrome, I was signed off from work for 9 months but was still expected to be “on call” on my Blackberry”. No-one could identify the issue and by the time I’d found someone who could actually fix it, I was told that if it had been left for a few more months, I’d have had permanent issues with my arms.

Firstly, it’s just not worth it. You’re no good to anyone or yourself when you’re not 100%.

Secondly, you make bad decisions when you’re not on full form, even though you think you’re making rational ones. This has a detrimental effect on any big ideas for your business.

I’ve had clients proudly tell me that they work 70+ hours per week. But when we drill down to what those 70 hours delivers – two thirds has been spent on tasks that are irrelevant to growing the business. That’s 45 hours a week of wasted time. What would you do with those extra hours instead of clicking away on your laptop?

Delegation and outsourcing is a long term business strategy. Without it, you won’t have the business you set out to have or the freedom and money you thought it was going to give you. It can be overwhelming if you don’t know where to begin. Book a free session with us to help you make a start in freeing up your time and living life a little bit more.
